USB Headphones for PC mixing

More and more DJs are downloading their music from the net in MP3 or other digital formats. Some quite popular artistes and record labels are starting release new material in digital formats only making them inaccessible to DJs who can’t use these.

There are many software titles and loads of hardware available to make the digital mixing experience as close as possible to the vinyl one but most of these are beyond the resources of young, new DJs.

One of the first problems encountered when starting to mix using a PC / laptop is how to monitor the sound of the tune you are queueing up when you only have one sound card. A second card can be the first expensive outlay in the process of turning a PC into a digital mixing station.

Well, one alternative to that is a pair of USB headphones. These headphones plug directly into a PC’s USB port and act as their own soundcard.

The Sennheiser PC155-USB is available from Empire Direct for £60 or irock! has some tasty looking USB 5.1 Surround Sound Headphones available on their US website.

Most currently available USB headphones seem designed for hardcore gamers and come complete with boom mike, although I doubt the mike would stand up to live-gig conditions.
